- On the morning of Friday, July 24, a crowd of 40–50 Israeli settlers entered the Palestinian village of Tal (Tell), southwest of Nablus — an area that is off-limits to Israeli civilians — and attacked homes. Human Rights Watch interviewed witnesses and verified six videos of the incident.
- In the confrontation that followed, four Palestinians and two Israelis (a settlement security team member and an IDF reserve officer) were killed. The Israeli army itself said the Israelis had entered an area barred to them without coordination.
- Rather than the attackers' outposts, the Israeli response has targeted the attacked village and its neighbors: roughly 50 Palestinians arrested in Tal and about 70 homes raided by Saturday morning, with the government announcing a 'wide-scale military operation' and ministers calling for demolition of Palestinian homes.

Every death here is a tragedy, including the two Israelis. But the sequence is not in dispute: the Israeli army itself says the settlers entered a prohibited area without coordination, and HRW-verified footage shows dozens of settlers attacking homes at dawn. "They were just hikers."
Hikers don't arrive 40–50 strong at dawn in an area closed to Israelis, stone family homes, and try to break in — that's the witness and video record HRW verified. The 'hikers' framing came from officials; the army's own statement contradicts the innocence of the entry.
"The army operation is restoring order."
The operation is directed at the village that was attacked: mass arrests in Tal, some 70 homes raided, ministers demanding demolitions. Punishing a community for the acts of individuals is collective punishment, prohibited under Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Meanwhile the mosque-burners of the reprisal wave fled before troops arrived and remain at large.
