"Finish the job"

Recurring phrase among Israeli and American officials and commentators, especially around ceasefire debates in 2024–2026.

What it signals

A completion metaphor without a stated end-state. When the 'job' has already flattened most of an enclave, what remains to 'finish' is the question the phrase is built never to answer.

How to answer

Force the referent: 'Finish what, exactly — name the end state.' Every possible honest answer (Hamas's last fighter? the population's departure?) either concedes impossibility or says the unsayable part aloud.
