The response
Answer the fair core, then name the function. Fair core: yes, atrocities elsewhere deserve outrage, and many of us give it — the same human-rights framework we cite condemns Assad, Xinjiang, and Darfur, and the same organizations document all of them. But the 'singling out' frame hides the actual reason Americans focus here: our government funds this one. Three-point-eight billion dollars a year under the current MOU, vetoes at the Security Council, weapons transfers during the war — no US taxpayer is subsidizing Assad. Special involvement creates special responsibility; that's not a double standard, it's the single standard of owning what you pay for. And notice the argument never proposes doing something about Syria — it proposes doing nothing about anything. Whataboutism isn't a concern for other victims; it's a solvent for all of them.
