Say the first part plainly and mean it: October 7 was a massacre of civilians — criminal, unjustifiable, full stop. 'Unprovoked,' though, is a claim about history, and the history exists. A sixteen-year blockade an Israeli official described as 'putting Palestinians on a diet.' An occupation the world's highest court has ruled unlawful. A 2023 that was already the deadliest West Bank year on record before October arrived. None of that justifies the massacre. All of it is needed to understand the world it came from — and explanation is not justification, the way a doctor explains a disease without excusing it. The 'unprovoked' frame exists to forbid the diagnosis, so the only prescription left is force, forever. Hold both truths: the atrocity was inexcusable, and the conditions were unbearable. A politics that can carry only one will keep producing both.
